To create these pieces, I imagined myself having conversations with the two women side by side. Therefore, I intentionally made their pieces share similar compositions as they shared similar perspectives when it comes to home and community. To reflect their individualism, I utilized traditional Hmong paj tnaub symbols to echo their personal journeys. I chose spirit animals for them because Hmong paj tnaub centralizes animals often and I have always felt this usage to be very powerful. Since I did not actually meet these women, I do not know if they align with the animals I have chosen. I do not ask them to embrace these forever, but only in this moment and that it brings them joy.
The butterfly, a beautiful carefree insect, represents the freeness of youth as well as the changes that we go through during this time. The fully opened wings showcase the importance of embracing life’s many possibilities and not being scared to face them. The traditional ram horn symbols represent the fierce determination of finding oneself that is instilled in every youth’s heart.

La mariposa, un insecto hermoso y despreocupado, representa la libertad de la juventud y los cambios que experimentamos durante esta etapa. Sus alas completamente desplegadas simbolizan la importancia de aprovechar las múltiples posibilidades de la vida y no temer enfrentarlas. El tradicional símbolo de los cuernos de carnero representa la férrea determinación de encontrarse a uno/a mismo/a, arraigada en el corazón de todo/a joven.
