Pacific Islander

Pacific Islanders are the Indigenous peoples and cultures of the Pacific Ocean region, including Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. This diverse community spans hundreds of islands and nations such as Samoa, Tonga, Hawaiʻi, Guam, Palau, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea, each with distinct languages, histories, and traditions. While often grouped together for geographic or demographic purposes, Pacific Islanders represent many unique identities.

Pacific Islanders are consistently underrepresented under the Asian Pacific Islander umbrella. Although the Pacific Islander community in Colorado is rapidly growing, their traditions and histories remain widely unrecognized. With little cultural and linguistic resources and support, many individuals in the community face feelings of isolation and disconnection.

CAPU’s work in this storytelling stream includes fostering spaces for gathering and storytelling through sport. As a newer programmatic area, CAPU is focusing on building trust and co-creating storytelling initiatives with community.

Mile High Pacific Slam

Our community co-leads came up with an innovative idea to kick off this storytelling program that would bring folks across the Pacific Islander diasopra together- volleyball. The Mile High Pacific Slam was a volleyball tournament and celebration of the Pacific Islander community hosted by Colorado Asian Pacific United in September 2025. With over 200 attendees representing 15 teams and several islands, it was a day full of energy, connection, and friendly competition.

Between games, we watched cultural dance and music, shopped the Pacific Islander marketplace, ate some amazing food, and listened to stories from the diverse attendees. We are grateful to BoomTown and Field House Aurora for hosting, Meta, Kai, and Phil for photo and video, No Ke Aloha for sponsoring and bringing food, Box State Rootz for emceeing, Halau Kalama for performing, and Mele Oli for coordinating the vendor marketplace.
