A story of belonging told through the eyes of our storyteller who carries both Hmong and Laotian heritage. This illustration depicts the tension of living between identities, sometimes Lao, other times Hmong, sometimes neither, hiding both to fit into American culture. What does it mean to be half Lao, or half Hmong? When to truly belong, you must be whole.

Sophia Siong
Sophia Siong is a recent graduate of Regis University where she completed her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Peace and Justice Studies. Sophia is the eldest daughter to a family of refugees and she carries a strong sense of resilience, cultural pride, and commitment to her community. Through her academic research and work with CAPU, Sophia is passionate about uncovering and sharing the hidden stories of the Hmong community in Colorado. Sophia curated this exhibition after gathering oral histories from the Colorado Hmong community and hopes that viewers can enjoy the meaningful and resilient stories through art.
